The Noth Carolina State Blue Berry is the Blueberry
The official sate blue berry for North Carolina is the bluberry. Now, that might sound
like a joke, but it's true. Though it's also a kind-of-joke known as how democaracy works.
Here is what happened. So, back in 2001, a class of fourth graders at Tommy's Road Elementary
were felling really empowered. And so they asked their state rep, "Hey, Carolyn Russel, can
you help us make the strawberry the official state fruit of North Carolina?" And Russel was like,
"I love this. Kids who want to be civically engaged, let's do it." She put a bill together and it
passed the House, but it stalled in the Senate because a diffrent class of fourth graders somewhere
else in the state were like, "Uh, uh, uh, not the strawberry." Okay. The official state fruit of Nor-
th Carolina ought to be the Scuppernon Grape. Because the oldest gape vine in North America is right
here in Noth Carolina and it's a Scuppernon Grape vine. So, they had a pretty good case, and the state
legislature was like, "Okay, how about this? We'll do the state fruit is the Scuppernon Grape but the
state berry is the Strawberry, right? Everyone Happy?" No, they were not all happy because a lawmaker
named John Carr showed up. He was from Bladen County and he was like, "I will be darned if we make the
Strawberry the state berry because Bladen County, my county, makes a lot of blueberries." All right, so
the Blueberry is going to be the state berry. All right, so you've got 2 classes of fourth graders and this
adult law maker all fighting over what to do. And what the legislature comes up with is this compromise
where the state fruit will be the Scuppernon Grape. And the state berry that is red colored is the Strawberry
and the state berry that is blue colored will be the Blueberry. Now, here's the thing. The Strawberry, is not
a berry. Okay? Strawberries are actually aggregate acsessory fruits. But I think there is a lesson in all of
this. In life and you want something and you work with other people to get it sometimes someone else will get
what you wanted and what you get will be something you have to share and also your particular portion of it
will be a lie. And you know what? I think that's kind of beautiful.
